Facetime-like “Duo” video calling app for Android and iOS, by Google

In May, Google unveiled its Duo app in I/O conference. A Facetime video chatting app, which allows you to chat with live video streaming with one another. Now it has been officially launched by Google on Android and iOS today(16/08/2016).

The Duo app lets you to chat or talk face to face with anyone else, who has the app. Just a thing you require is their phone numbers. Launching of it has been taken place at a very basic level, just a significant feature of it is, Knock Knock, this lets you to see the video of the opposite person on the call, before you receive it. Google in its official statement said that” It has built Duo for speed and simplicity, the app adjusts the video resolution depending on the speed of your connection automatically, and the ensures that all calls are fully encrypted”.

But, if we compare Google’s Duo with other apps, then company has started very late in the competition. This may also bring a loss for Google, since apps like Microsoft’s Skype, Facebook’s Messenger, imo etc, also provide users, these functionalities with ease. And some of them also provide the feature of Group calling, like a conference call. This app doesn’t plugins into the Google communication apps like Hangouts, Gmail etc. Which means purpose behind the launch of the app is, only to gain real avenue from customers by providing exceptional service. Google also tested in May and revealed that it worked with the team behind WebRTC to develop a new product, which provides new and fast protocol, with secure video calling.

Now, competition between tech giants will start and it will be worth watchable that if Google will be able to make a position in this field or not. Because in developing countries like India, where bandwidth comes costly and many apps are running in the market with a good reputation, it will be hard for Google to beat them and grab the podium from them. This app will be soon available on Google Play Store in coming few days, over the worldwide.
