Apple launched 3 new mac devices in the ‘One More Thing’ event. Apple just launched new versions of the MacBook Pro 13-inch, MacBook Air, and Mac Mini computers. The only difference in these devices is the processor as these devices will be powered by the company’s proprietary Apple M1 chip. For the last 15 years, Apple has been using Intel’s processor which it announced it plans to change from this year and the US tech giant has finally done this with this lineup of systems.
The Apple M1 was the major highlight of the event and Apple announced the chip is manufactured using the 5nm process. The chip is part of Apple Silicon Processors and will be an eight-core chip along with a custom integrated GPU. Other features also include an image signal processor, Secure Enclave, and Neural Engine.

Apple M1 SoC Features and Performance Enhancements
Apple has had a vision of operating completely independent from any other brands and manufacturers for any products or parts. The iPhones and iPad have been manufactured using this philosophy for the last decade ever since the company’s shift to its proprietary SoC. But that wasn’t the case with MacBook and Mac desktops until now as the company has finally unveiled its proprietary chip to run the desktops and notebooks.
The Apple M1 chipset is designed specifically keeping in mind small size and power efficiency. Apple also claims this chip is built to replace all the discrete chips required by the CPU, IO controllers, security co-processor, and memory controller. This chip is also to implement the 5nm process to pack as many as 16 billion transistors in one single chip.
Performance-wise, this chip is claimed by Apple to be the world’s fastest and deliver the world’s best performance per watt. Apple has also claimed that this chip will be capable of delivering a significantly higher performance by making use of just a quarter of power consumed by today’s other top laptops.
In comparison to previous Intel-powered Macs, the new Mac can deliver 3X performance. The four efficiency cores present in the M1 SoC are itself as powerful as the dual-core Intel CPU powering the MacBook Air while consuming lesser power.
Coming to Graphics performance, the chipset has eight GPU cores delivering 2.6 Teraflops of throughput which the company claimed to be the world’s most powerful integrated GPU. This is also said to be twice as powerful as current GPUs. The software is also likely to be granted access to more memory than in the case of any chipset before this.
Another interesting inclusion is that of Machine Learning acceleration thanks to the use of Neural Engine. The integrated software is capable of 11 trillion operations per second, for tasks like image resolution upscaling, video reframing, and voice recognition are drastically improved. Apart from this, the Secure Enclave is also implemented which promises best-in-class security.
Apple has also engineered the MacOS 11 Big Sur for scheduling tasks between the high-performance and efficiency cores. The devices using Apple M1 is also said to instantly wake from sleep just like the iPhones and iPad.
Apple has said it has worked on all of its software to optimize it even worked with vendors including Adobe are readying updates to their offerings. Logic Pro will also be allowing up to 3X more instruments and effect plugins. While the Final Cut Pro is also said to run at about 6X faster along with rendering complex timelines.
MacBook Air Apple Silicon Version
The MacBook Air was introduced by Apple in the event claiming it to be the world’s best-selling 13-inch notebook. It is already very popular thanks to its ultra-thin size and lightweight design but now with the introduction of the M1 Silicon chipset, it is claimed to be 3.5X faster CPU Performance, 5X faster graphics, and 9X faster machine learning in comparison to the previous generation notebooks with the Intel chipset.
Apple also said the MacBook Air was faster than 98% of the laptops sold last year. Not just the speed, the other enhancements include the new notebook is also going to be much more silent in running applications. Apple also claims the laptop will be delivering up to 15 hours of wireless Web browsing and 18 hours of video playback, 6 hours longer than before.
MacBook Pro 13-inch Apple Silicon Version
The pro version of the best selling MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro is also set to be making use of the new chipset from Apple and boosting its performance. The new version of the notebook is said to be 2.8X faster, with up to 5X faster graphics and 11X faster machine learning than the previous generation. This is likely to make it the world’s fastest compact pro notebook.
The Pro notebook makes use of active cooling which allows it to deliver sustained in several performances such as video transcoding and compiling code. The battery life in the notebook by making use of the new chipset is likely to be up to 17 hours of wireless Web browsing and 20 hours of video playback, which is 10 hours more than before making it one of the longest battery life provided by any Mac device till date.
Apple already made use of studio-quality mics for video calls or recording audio and that coupled with an improved M1 camera processor for sharper video will make the video calling and recording experience much better. For connectivity, the laptop has two Thunderbolt ports compatible with USB 4 and can drive the Apple Pro Display XDR at full 6K resolution, all in the same design as before.
Mac Mini Apple Silicon Version
Finally, the Mac Mini also receives a refreshed model making use of the Silicon Chipset from Apple. This device is claimed to be up to 3X faster in terms of CPU performance than the previous version, with a 6X increase in graphics performance and 15X faster machine learning. It is also reportedly just one-tenth of the size of any other top-selling desktop PC in the market while being up to 5X faster as well.
