MediaTek is working on 7nm 5G capable chipset: Report

MediaTek, known for making chipsets for budget and mid-range smartphone, is now set to come with the latest chipset for flagship smartphones. The company itself revealed that it is currently working on the chipset and it will be fabricated on a 7nm process. The company also revealed that the chip will come with 5G support. To recall, flagship chipset like Snapdragon 855 and Kirin 980 also works 7nm process. Samsung’s Exynos 9820 is also a flagship chipset but works on the 8nm process.

As of now, the company has MediaTek Helio P90 as the highest chipset based on the 12nm process but there are no smartphones out there in the market with this chipset. On the other hand, there is MediaTek Helio P70 chipset based on the 12nm process is available on the market with smartphones like Realme 3 and Oppo F11 Pro.

The upcoming flagship chipset will be positioned above Helio P90 SoC and will be launched later this year. The exact date of yet to be confimed.

MediaTek vice-president in conversation with AndroidAuthority revealed that the upcoming chipset will be powerful than current Helio P90 SoC.

I think you’ll see something moving up-tier from us. How we brand it and what it shows up as, I’m not sure. But you’ll certainly see more high-end capability than, say, we’ve exhibited on the P90 Finbarr Moynihan, MediaTek’s vice president of corporate sales and business development for the Americas and Europe

The upcoming chipset is also going to be cheaper than chipsets like Snapdragon 855, Kirin 980 or Exynos 9820. This will help smartphone manufacturers to bring cheaper 5G smartphones with flagship performance.

To recall, MediaTek has already announced Helio M70 modem which is built on TMSC’s 7nm process. The modem supports 2G to 5G. As of now, it is not clear that upcoming chipset will rely on M70 modem or the company will also introduce a new 5G modem.
