Mi Mix Fold Xiaomi’s First Foldable Phone Launched: All You Need To Know

Xiaomi has finally entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of Mi Mix Fold. The world hasn’t quite joined the foldable bandwagon quite seriously yet, but several companies are releasing their foldable smartphones. The phone just like Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, the phone from Xiaomi features a U-shaped hinge design that folds inwards. Interestingly, the Mi Mix Fold is also the first phone to feature Xiaomi’s proprietary Surge C1 image signal processor (ISP) and Liquid Lens technology. Moreover, this device from Xiaomi is more than just another foldable smartphone as it has several interesting features as well.

Mi Mix Fold Specifications And Features

The Mi Mix Fold is the first foldable smartphone from Xiaomi featuring an 8.01-inch WQHD+ flexible OLED display with a U-shaped hinge design having inward folding. The display supports HDR10+ and has an 1860 x 2480 pixels resolution, a refresh rate of 60 Hz, an aspect ratio of 4:3, a pixel density of 387 PPI, a peak brightness of 900 nits, and a screen to body ratio of 85.9%.

While the front display or Cover Display of the smartphone is a 6.52-inch AMOLED display having a resolution of 840×2,520 pixels, a refresh rate of 90 Hz, an aspect ratio of 27:9, and a peak brightness of 700 nits.

The most ‘delicate’ or ‘risky’ part of any foldable smartphone is the hinge and the display along the hinge of the device. The Mi Mix Fold is said to have been tested for about 200,000 bends in reliability testing and up to a million bends in extreme reliability testing. The inner display also supports Dolby Vision standards, has a DCI-P3 color gamut, and a contrast ratio of 4,300,000:1.

Mi Mix Fold Specs

The Mi Mix Fold runs on the Android 10 based MIUI 12 and is powered by the Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC coupled with Adreno 660 GPU. It also has up to 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Xiaomi has also included a butterfly-type cooling system having a VC liquid cooling, thermal gel, and multilayer graphite sheets, along with other heat dissipation methods.

Now coming to the camera sensors onboard the foldable smartphone, it has a triple camera setup on the back. The primary camera is a 108-megapixel Samsung HM2 sensor having an aperture of f/1.8. The secondary camera is the 13-Megapixel Ultrawide camera sensor having a field of view of 123-degrees and an aperture of f/2.4. Lastly, there is also an 8-Megapixel Telephoto camera with Liquid Lens technology. The phone also has a 20-Megapixel selfie camera sensor.

Another highlight of the Mi Mix Fold is the Surge C1 ISP technology that it incorporates. The technology is said to be in development for the last couple of years. The processor is the company’s proprietary technology that can offer high performance while consuming lesser resources at the same time. It also brings an improved 3A algorithm and low-light focus capabilities to bring more accurate autofocus, auto-exposure, and auto white balance over the competition.

Xiaomi Surge C1

Apart from the Surge C1 ISP technology, the Mi Mix Fold also uses Liquid Lens technology. The technology is claimed to make use of the principle of human eye bionics and forms a lens-like structure with a transparent fluid wrapped in film. The phone also has a high-precision motor to change the radius of the spherical surface’s curvature to offer up to 3x optical zoom, up to 30x telephoto, and a minimum focus distance of three centimeters.

The connectivity options on the smartphone include 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, and a USB Type-C port. The phone also has an in-display fingerprint reader. It also makes use of quad speakers tuned by Harman Kardon while being powered by Xiaomi’s own quad-speaker algorithm. The company claims this brings 3D spatial audio field playback.

The foldable smartphone also comes with a Corning Gorilla Glass protection at the back with a ceramic texture. The company has also launched a special Mi Mix Fold Ceramic Special Edition which is basically the same smartphone having a gold middle frame and volume buttons along with having a black ceramic back with special laser engraving.

To run the two displays of this smartphone, it houses a dual-cell 5,020mAh battery with support for 67W Fast Charging. The phone is claimed by the company to be fully charged in about 37 minutes. The unfolded phone measures 173.27×133.38×7.62mm and 173.27×69.8×17.2mm when folded. The phone measures 317 grams, while its Ceramic Special Edition weighs 332 grams.


Mi Mix Fold Pricing And Availability

The Mi Mix Fold has been unveiled in China having a starting price tag of CNY 9,999 (approx Rs. 1,12,100) for the 12 GB RAM + 256 GB storage option. The 12 GB + 512 GB storage variant model has a selling price of CNY 10,999 (approx Rs. 1,23,300). While the most expensive smartphone of this series is the 16 GB + 512 GB storage device that will be sold for CNY 12,999 (approx Rs. 1,45,700).

The Mi Mix Fold will be available for customers in China from April 16 while the pre-orders for the device have been started in the country from March 30.

There is no information regarding the global launch and the availability of the phone in India yet.
