Update (July 2, 2020): Google Play Store has removed all 59 Chinese applications banned by the government and also informed the affected developers. The company adds that it is constantly monitoring the Government of India’s interim orders.
Also, the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in India blocked access to TikTok servers which means those who already have installed the app will not be allowed to access anything. The website is also not working.
Earlier (June 29, 2020): A week ago, 52 Chinese apps were red-flagged by Indian Intelligence Agencies. Now, the Government of India bans 59 Chinese apps which are prejudicial to India’s sovereignty and integrity, defence of India, state security, and public order.
As per the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, it has received several complaints from different sources including many allegations of abuse of several smartphone applications running on Android and iOS platforms to intercept and secretly transfer user data to servers that have locations outside India.
The list of banned apps includes the most popular social media video sharing platform – TikTok. Other popular apps in the list include file sharing app ShareIt, shopping app Shein, ES File Explorer, UC Browser and many more. Some of Xiaomi official apps like Mi Community and Mi Video Call are also banned.
As per the press release, “safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile and internet users. This decision is a targeted move to ensure safety and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace”.
These apps will be removed from Apple App Store and Google Play Store. For those users who have previously downloaded the apps, they will b restricted by their Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
