IRCTC Enforces Aadhaar Requirement for First 15 Minutes of Reservation Window

Show Quick Read

Effective October 1, 2025, Indian Railways will require Aadhaar authentication for all online general reserved ticket bookings made through IRCTC’s website or mobile app during the first 15 minutes after the reservation window opens. The change is intended to reduce misuse and give genuine passengers fair access during peak demand periods.

New Policy Details

What the Mandate Covers

  • The rule applies to general reserved tickets booked online (via IRCTC website or app).
  • It does not affect Tatkal tickets in this respect, since those already require Aadhaar authentication.

Time Frame & Effective Date

  • This Aadhaar requirement will be in force during the first 15 minutes after the reservation window opens for any train.
  • The new policy becomes effective October 1, 2025.

Reservation Window & Existing Rules

  • General reservations open 60 days ahead of train departure.
  • Offline booking through PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counters remains unchanged; Aadhaar authentication during first 15 minutes is only for online bookings.
  • There remains a restriction preventing authorised ticket agents from booking during the opening day’s first 10 minutes under existing regulations. This is separate but complements the new Aadhaar mandate.

Purpose and Implications

Why the Change is Being Made

  • To curb misuse by agents, brokers, or automated systems that quickly book large volumes of tickets immediately when booking opens.
  • To reserve early access during high-demand windows for genuine passengers.

What This Means for Passengers

  • Users must ensure their IRCTC accounts are Aadhaar-linked and verified ahead of time to take advantage of the first 15 minutes.
  • If users are not Aadhaar authenticated, they must wait until after the first 15 minutes to make their booking.
  • Other booking avenues (like PRS counters, or general booking after the 15-minute window) remain unaffected by this change for online transactions.

Comparison with Tatkal Booking Rules

  • Tatkal bookings have required Aadhaar authentication since July 1, 2025.
  • In Tatkal, additional security measures, like OTPs tied to Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers and restriction of agent bookings during early Tatkal windows, have also been instituted.

Challenges & Public Response

Potential Issues

  • There may be name mismatches or verification delays if user profile details on IRCTC do not exactly match those on Aadhaar.
  • During heavy demand, such as on busy routes, even 15 minutes may not prevent tickets from being fully booked. Some public commentary suggests demand-supply mismatch remains a larger concern.

Support & Criticism

  • Supporters argue this ensures a fairer, more transparent process, deterring misuse by intermediaries.
  • Critics note that without increasing seat capacity or better infrastructure, measures like this may only partially solve the problem of ticket unavailability during peak times.

Implementation & What Users Should Do

  • Users should verify their Aadhaar in their IRCTC profile before October 1 to avoid missing out during the initial booking window.
  • Ensure name, date of birth, mobile number and other details in IRCTC match those in Aadhaar exactly.
  • Be aware of the booking window timings (general reservation opens 60 days in advance) and plan accordingly.
  • For PRS counter bookings or after the 15-minute window, the usual process holds.

From October 1, 2025, Indian Railways will require Aadhaar authentication for all online general reserved ticket bookings during the first 15 minutes after the reservation window opens. The measure is designed to prioritize genuine users and reduce abuse by agents and automated systems.

While the offline booking and post-window online booking processes remain unaffected, railway users must ensure their IRCTC profiles are Aadhaar-linked and verified in advance to benefit from early access.
