Android 12 Timeline For Smartphones From Several Manufacturers

Google has now released the Beta program of Android 12 for developers. Despite the official release being a few months away, there is already a timeline in place for the expected software update for several devices. There is no official word from either the companies or Google themselves regarding the same.

Although many devices might not even receive this update from Google, even then there are a large number of premium smartphones that will be getting updated to Android 12.

Google

Google devices are always the very first devices to get the latest software updates being the same company manufacturing the phones as well as the OS. So Pixel phone users have nothing to worry about when it comes to getting the latest software updates.

Pixel devices are also eligible for the Beta programs allowing the users to test the latest operating system even before the official release. But Pixel devices also are said to be given just 3 years of software updates from the company. The devices certain to receive the latest software update include Pixel 3, 4, 5, 3a, and 4a/4a 5G. But, the upcoming Android 12 update is likely going to be the last update that the Pixel 3 series smartphones receive.


Samsung

Arguably the biggest name in Android smartphones, Samsung does provide a software update to the latest Android for some generations now. Earlier this was the case only for the premium offering from the company but even this has changed in the last few years. The company does provide updates to the latest Android version for three generations for most of its latest mobiles and tablets.

So going by this, say devices such as Samsung S21 series that came with Android 11 will receive software updates till Android 14. There are several phones which the company promised to provide with 3 years of support while there are also a few which will receive despite no such claims with those devices from the company.

  • Galaxy S series: Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, S20 Ultra, S20+ 5G, S20+, S20 5G, S20 along with the S10 5G, S10+, S10, S10e, S10 Lite, and also the upcoming S series devices
  • Galaxy Note series: Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G, Note20 Ultra, Note20 5G, Note20, Note10+ 5G, Note10+, Note10 5G, Note10, Note10 Lite, and also the upcoming Note series devices
  • Galaxy Foldable devices: Galaxy Z Fold2 5G, Z Fold2, Z Flip 5G, Z Flip, Fold 5G, Fold, and the to be released Z series devices
  • Galaxy A series: Galaxy A71 5G, A71, A51 5G, A51, A90 5G and select upcoming A series devices
  • Tablets: Galaxy Tab S7+ 5G, Tab S7+, Tab S7 5G3, Tab S7, Tab S6 5G4, Tab S6, Tab S6 Lite, along with the upcoming Tab S series devices.

OnePlus

The biggest emerging name in the smartphone market around the world especially India, OnePlus has a reputation for providing very quick software updates to its devices. The Android 11 update which is still rolling out for several brands even today, OnePlus flagship smartphones were amongst the first devices to get the update back in September itself, about 1 month after the official launch of the OS.

OnePlus officially declared that the OnePlus 5 and 5T won’t receive the Android 11 update making the OnePlus 6 and 6T likely out of contention to get the Android 12 update. But the rest of the lineup of devices from the company including the likes of OnePlus 8 and 8T series devices, OnePlus 7 and 7T series, and all smartphones in the Nord range of products will receive the Android 12 software update. And going by the last software update, these devices will start receiving the update in about 6-8 months for all the devices to be updated to the latest Android version.


Other Brands

Not much information is available regarding the update coming to other brands as of now, but if previous launches and releases are to be considered, any smartphone or tablet coming with the Android 11 out of the box is most likely to get the Android 12 update as well. Some companies like Nokia have also mentioned that their smartphones will receive 2 software updates so any Nokia device coming with Android 10 or Android 11 will receive the Android 12 update as well.
