Google Announces Rs. 75,000 Crore Investment In India

On Monday, during the annual Google For India virtual live-stream event, the Chief Executive Officer of Google Sundar Pichai announced that Google will make an investment of over $10 billion over the course of next five to seven years to help enhance the digital economy of India.

Google To $10 Billion Investment In India: Explained

The primary focus of this $10 billion investment from Google will be helping every citizen to get instant access to the internet and several online services regardless of the language they communicate in. These investments will also help small businesses to be a part of the digital revolution.

During the announcements, Sundar Pichai stated that,

“Today, I’m excited to announce the Google for India Digitization Fund. Through this effort, we will invest ₹75,000 crores, or approximately $10 billion, into India over the next 5-7 years. We’ll do this through a mix of equity investments, partnerships, and operational, infrastructure, and ecosystem investments. This is a reflection of our confidence in the future of India and its digital economy.”

Additionally, Google is also planning to enhance the health and education department of India by using Artificial Intelligence. For instance, Sundar Pichai stated that AI flood forecasting systems can help prevent the loss of both lives and valuables.

These are the four areas of focus as listed by Google in its official blog post,

  • First, enabling affordable access and information for every Indian in their own language, whether it’s Hindi, Tamil, Punjabi or any other
  • Second, building new products and services that are deeply relevant to India’s unique needs
  • Third, empowering businesses as they continue or embark on their digital transformation
  • Fourth, leveraging technology and AI for social good, in areas like health, education, and agriculture

Pichai further stated that,

“There’s still more work to do in order to make the internet affordable and useful for a billion Indians…from improving voice input and computing for all of India’s languages to inspiring and supporting a whole new generation of entrepreneurs,”
