How To Install Windows 10 On Xiaomi Mi 4

A couple of days back, Xiaomi‘s founder and president, Bin Lin posted a photo on Weibo announcing the Windows 10 Mobile based ROM for Mi 4 users in China. Xiaomi has finally made the ROM available for download on its forums.

The Windows 10 Mobile ROM makes Xiaomi’s Mi 4 one of the first mainstream smartphones to run on both, Android 5.1 Lollipop based MIUI 7 and Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mobile OS. The recently launched Mi Pad 2 is the other Xiaomi device that will let users choose between Windows 10 and Android. The ROM is available for LTE version of Mi 4 in China.

It is indeed a big step for both Android and Windows Phone users and developers as the availability of this ROM opens a good opportunity and possibilities ahead. If you’re one of those who own the 4G LTE variant of the Mi 4, you can use Microsoft’s tool to flash the ROM onto the device. On Xiaomi’s forum, the company has also mentioned that the ROM may contain some bugs, so flash it at your risk.
[warning title=”NOTE” icon=”exclamation-triangle”]This Procedure is for 4G LTE Mi 4 Users. As the Indian variant is 3G only, flashing the ROM might brick your smartphone. If you having Mi 4 LTE variant then proceed further.[/warning]

How to flash the Windows 10 Mobile ROM on your Mi 4

  1. Head over to Microsoft’s Windows Insider page here and sign-up for the program.
  2. Download the Windows 10 Flashing tool for Mi 4 from here. It is compressed zip file which you can unzip on the desktop or any other drive. Do remember to take backup of your photos, videos, contacts, messages and other important data.
  3. Double-click on the MiFlash20150601.exe file inside the folder that you just unzipped. This will install the flashing tool. It may ask you for administrator access and to install required drivers – just click on yes and install. Once the installation is complete, click on finish.
  4. After the installation is done, you’ll find the MiFlash Tool in your installed programs. Double-click to run. Now, just connect your Mi 4 using the USB cable to your laptop / desktop, download the Windows 10 ROM using the MiFlash Tool and flash it. 

Congratulations, if everything goes fine, you’ll now have Windows 10 Mobile running on your Mi 4.
