Vi Rolls Out India’s First Recharge-Linked Handset Theft & Loss Insurance

Show Quick Read

Vodafone Idea (Vi), one of India’s leading telecom operators, has announced a pioneering move in the prepaid segment by launching the country’s first “recharge-linked handset theft and loss insurance.”

Announced on December 15, 2025, this initiative aims to provide financial security to millions of prepaid users across Android and iOS platforms. By bundling insurance coverage directly with affordable recharge packs, Vi is addressing a critical gap in the device protection market.

Understanding the New Insurance Offering

In a bid to democratize device protection, Vi has integrated insurance coverage into its everyday prepaid recharge packs. Unlike traditional insurance policies that require separate premiums, lengthy documentation, and are often limited to screen damage, this new offering specifically targets theft and loss.

This strategic move comes at a time when smartphone penetration is at an all-time high. According to a May 2025 report by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), approximately 85.5% of households now own at least one smartphone. However, the rising cost of devices, with mid-range phones costing between ₹20,000 and ₹25,000, makes the financial impact of losing a device significant for the average consumer.

Plan Breakdown: Costs and Benefits

The new Vi recharge-linked handset insurance is designed to be accessible, with entry-level packs starting as low as ₹61. The insurance covers handsets up to a value of ₹25,000.

Here is a detailed breakdown of the three specific packs launched by Vi:

Pack Price (MRP)Sum InsuredTelco Benefits (Data & Validity)Insurance Validity
₹61Up to ₹25,0002GB Data (15 Days Validity)30 Days
₹201Up to ₹25,00010GB Data (30 Days Validity)180 Days
₹251Up to ₹25,00010GB Data (30 Days Validity)365 Days

Key Plan Highlights

  • Validity Discrepancy: It is important for users to note that the insurance validity often exceeds the data validity. For example, the ₹251 pack offers data for only 30 days, but keeps the device insured for a full year (365 days).
  • Coverage Cap: The maximum claimable amount for theft or loss is capped at ₹25,000 across all three tiers.
  • Device Compatibility: The plan covers both iOS and Android devices, ensuring broad market applicability.

Addressing Market Gaps in Device Protection

The handset insurance market is projected to reach $2.6 billion this year, growing at nearly 14% annually. Despite this growth, most existing options focus heavily on accidental damage or liquid damage, often leaving theft and loss uncovered.

The “Mid-Range” Trap

For many prepaid users, buying a separate insurance policy is viewed as an expensive hassle. Traditional policies often come with high premiums that do not justify the cost of a mid-range phone. Vi’s model disrupts this by:

  1. Removing Entry Barriers: There is no separate policy purchase required.
  2. Affordability: By embedding the cost into a recharge, the premium feels incremental and manageable.
  3. Simplified Process: Vi promises a “digital-first journey,” leveraging existing customer data to minimize paperwork and speed up claims resolution.

How to Avail the Insurance

The process has been designed for friction-free adoption. Prepaid customers simply need to recharge with one of the three designated packs (₹61, ₹201, or ₹251). Once the recharge is successful, the insurance policy is automatically activated for the specified duration.

This “recharge and relax” approach eliminates the need for visiting store branches or filling out physical forms, leveraging the telecom operator’s existing digital infrastructure to manage the policy lifecycle.

The launch of the Vi recharge-linked handset insurance represents a significant shift in how value-added services are delivered in the Indian telecom sector. By securing smartphones against theft and loss for as little as ₹61, Vi is not only enhancing customer retention but also providing a crucial financial safety net for the digital-first population.

As smartphone prices continue to rise, such bundled utility services are likely to become a standard expectation among prepaid users.
