In a major development in the Telecom sector, Reliance Jio has announced calling to other networks will be free once again. This change will be enforced from the New Year that’s tomorrow January 1, 2020. Back in 2017 Jio imposed interconnect charges making users pay for every non-Jio number they called.

Jio is the fastest growing telco in the country right now and is constantly adding a record number of users each and every day. But it was facing heavy scrutiny ever since it started charging its users for calls to other telcos.
Jio used to do so since TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) used to charge interconnect usage charges (IUC) for all calls being made. But in the latest circular being issued by TRAI, the IUC will be scrapped for all domestic voice calls from January 1 and hence Jio has also taken back its other network calling charge and made it free from now onwards.
Today, Jio has delivered on that promise and made off-net voice calls free again. Jio stands firm on its commitment to make the common Indian the beneficiary of advanced technologies like VoLTE. Jio is a customer-obsessed organisation and cares for every single user. All our users enjoy free voice calls on Jio. Through Technological innovation, Jio will continue to deliver revolutionary products and services to its users, with a customer-first approach. Official Statement From Jio
But other telecom companies were in favor of IUC as it turned out it was a huge revenue source for them thanks to Jio’s huge popularity in the country. According to an estimate, Jio had paid nearly Rs. 13,500 crores to other operators in the last three years because of IUC.
