This skill of yours will help you a great deal when you start working as an interior decorator. An interior decorator does not work alone. He or she works with a team, and the team may comprise of people from different fields, and backgrounds and clashes between them are inevitable. The client may also be fickle-minded, and that may be hard to deal with. As the leader of the team, it is the duty to see to these problems and bring them under control.

Although it is a creative profession, the profession also demands practicality from you. You need to handle the figures, keep tabs on the progress of the project and make sure that it wraps up within the given time. Apart from making sure that the project is going on smoothly, you have to make sure that it can be done within the budget. It is one of the many challenges that interior decorators face on an everyday basis – is to work around the given budget. You should have excellent negotiating skills to negotiate with the vendors. You will also have to look out for hidden costs and keep the clients informed about the progress of the project.

You also need to have hand drawing skills because you need to draw up plans and show them to your clients before it is finalised and you can start working on it. Apart from hand-drawing skills, you should also be proficient in using Adobe Photoshop, AutoCAD, 3D Home planner, Archicad, SketchUp, Vectorworks, Live Home 3D, AutoDesk Revit and 3D Max.

Other than being good with technology, you need to have excellent communication skills in order to deal with your clients and understand what they want from you. You need to listen carefully to what they are saying and then formulate a plan according to their ideas.
