Apple M1 Pro and M1 max SoCs are the successors of the M1 chip. Both the chips are said to outperform the competition by a significant number.
Apple said that the GPU in M1 Pro will be 2x times faster than the M1 chip, whereas, the GPU on M1 Max will be 4x faster. Moreover, these both chips are based on 5nm process technology just like we saw in the last year’s Apple M1 chip.
These chips with SoC architecture features better performance per watt, better power efficiency, increased memory bandwidth, unified memory, and increased capacity.
Let’s discuss the specifications of both the chips and what they have to offer.
M1 Pro Specifications
M1 Pro comes with 33.7 billion transistors which is more than 2x the amount in M1. It will feature a new 10-core CPU which will include eight high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores. The new 10-core CPU provides 70% faster performance than M1.
M1 Pro has up to a 16-core CPU which provides 2x faster GPU performance than the last year’s M1 chip. The GPU new M1 Pro is known to deliver more performance than the powerful discrete GPU on PC notebooks while consuming up to 70% lesser power.
Up to 32GB unified memory can be configured on the M1 Pro chip while having up to 200GB/s of memory bandwidth. Along with it, the M1 Pro chip has the dedicated acceleration for ProRes professional video codec. It allows playing multiple streams of 4K and 8K ProRes video while consuming very less power.
M1 Max Specifications
M1 Max has the same 10 core CPU as that of the M1 Pro. It comes with 57 billion transistors, which is 70% more than the M1 Pro chip and 3.5x times more than the Apple M1 chip. M1 Max has a 32-core GPU which provides 4x faster graphics performance than the Apple M1 Chip.
Comparing the M1 Max to the previous generation 13-inch Macbook Pro, it has up to 13x times faster complex timeline rendering in Final Cut Pro. The M1 Max chip can be configured with up to 64GB fast unified memory. Moreover, it has up to 400GB/s memory bandwidth, which is double the M1 Pro, and 6x times the M1 chip.
M1 Max has two ProRes accelerators which provide 2x times faster video encoding when compared to M1 Pro. When compared to the previous-gen 16-inch MacBook Pro, the new MacBook Pro with M1 Max can transcode ProRes video in the compressor 10x faster.
Final Words
Both the M1 Pro and M1 Max has 16 core Neural engine. This is for better on-device machine learning acceleration along with improved camera performance. They both have a new display for connecting multiple external displays. Moreover, they both have custom image signal processors which along with a Neural engine for enhanced image quality.
M1 Pro and M1 Max SoCs come with the latest Secure Enclave, runtime anti-exploitation technologies, and hardware verified secure boot, for best-in-class security. With these many features, Apple’s new MacBooks included with M1 Pro and M1 Max SoCs will lead the competition.
