Qualcomm Unveiled 6nm Snapdragon 778G 5G SoC: Specifications & Features

Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 778G at its 5G Summit on Wednesday. The new system-on-chip (SoC), which sits between the Snapdragon 750G and Snapdragon 780G, is aimed to give a better multimedia experience with an all-new configuration. The Snapdragon 778G succeeds the Snapdragon 768G, which debuted in May of last year.

The new processor uses a 6nm manufacturing technique, which could result in significant processing and power efficiency gains over the Snapdragon 768G SoC. When compared to its predecessor, Qualcomm claims that the 778G can give two times higher artificial intelligence (AI) performance.

Qualcomm said that the Snapdragon 778G SoC will be commercially available in the second quarter of 2021. Honor, iQOO, Motorola, Oppo, Realme, and Xiaomi will all use the new technology in their high-end handsets. While other smartphone manufacturers have yet to announce their plans, Honor has stated that the Snapdragon 778G will be available on the Honor 50 series.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G Specifications

On the Snapdragon 778G SoC, Qualcomm has integrated the Kryo 670 CPU, which is predicted to give up to 40% better performance than the Kryo 475 CPU featured on the Snapdragon 768G. The Adreno 642L GPU is also included in the processor, which is said to give up to 40% quicker graphics than its predecessor.

The Snapdragon 778G incorporates a low-power Hexagon 770 processor and a 2nd-generation Qualcomm Sensing Hub to enable next-generation AI experiences in addition to the upgraded CPU and GPU.

The Qualcomm Spectra 570L triple image signal processor (ISP) in the Snapdragon 778G is capable of simultaneously capturing triple photos with a resolution of up to 22 megapixels. The triple ISP can also capture 4K HDR10+ footage and supports wide, ultra-wide, and zoom cameras.

Connectivity and Salient features

In terms of connectivity, the Snapdragon 778G contains an inbuilt Snapdragon X53 5G modem that supports sub-6 5G networks and mmWave. Wi-Fi 6 multi-gigabit class speeds of up to 2.9 Gbps are supported via the Qualcomm FastConnect 6700 Connectivity System.

The chipset supports Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, 5G, and Bluetooth v5.2. It is also said to have a low latency connection. Location services are supported by GPS, Glonass, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, and NavIC.

Snapdragon 778G features Qualcomm Game Quick Touch, which is said to give up to a 20% faster input response for touch latency than its predecessor. Variable Rate Shading is one of the other Qualcomm Snapdragon Premium Gaming features on the processor.

The chipset supports LPDDR5 RAM with a frequency of up to 3200MHz and a capacity of up to 16GB. It also supports full-HD+ screens with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz, as well as HDR10 and HDR10+. Smartphone makers may also be able to give displays with a resolution of up to 4K and a refresh rate of 60Hz.

Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+ technology is also available for a quick charging option. With the USB Type-C port, the chip also supports USB version 3.1.
