WhatsApp Updates Privacy Policy: All You Need To Know

Worlds biggest social networking messaging app, WhatsApp has made several changes to its privacy policy with the objective to better integrate products and services offered by Facebook. Unlike any usual release of an app update, this update was brought in the policy of the app silently earlier this week. Some users have started receiving an app notice from Tuesday to confirm this updated policy.

What Is The Update? And Why Should I Do It?

In a nutshell, the changes made to WhatsApp’s updated policy are to make it easier for WhatsApp’s parent company Facebook and other sister apps to access data through WhatsApp easily. If you go to WhatsApp’s updated privacy policy and terms of service, it does display additional information on how the app collects and handles user data.

There are several sections here including Transactions and Payments Data as well as Location Information to provide details on precise data collection by the app. WhatsApp has also included specific information on business interactions taking place through its messaging app.

And as far as accepting these updated policy changes go, these policy changes have to be accepted by the users before 8th February 2021, or else users won’t be able to make use of the app anymore. WhatsApp has started sending in-app notifications to users to inform the users about the same and make the necessary checks to continue using their account.

How Does WhatsApp Share Data With Facebook?

Along with rolling out this latest privacy policy update, WhatsApp also released a section on the updated policy notes to explain how it hares data with other Facebook brands like Instagram.

WhatsApp mainly shares the user data for the sakes of convenience and safety as it says it will help in improving the user’s experience with Facebook and other sister Facebook apps. This will take place by suggesting user’s friends and content based on their preference and choices in the apps.

Other than this, the overall experience can also be personalized and help in making purchases through the app. Users can link all apps to their Facebook Pay accounts to make payments much easier.

There is also push “safety, security and integrity” added to the app’s ecosystem to deal with abuse and spam. This will help WhatsApp improve its infrastructure and delivery systems, and help users to understand how both its services and other Facebook products work.
