As an incremental upgrade to the Snapdragon 865 Plus Mobile Platform launched back in July, Qualcomm has just announced the new Snapdragon 870 5G Mobile Platform. This comes after the Snapdragon 888 5nm SoC was unveiled. This chipset offers up to 3.2 GHz of Qualcomm Kryo 585 CPU Prime core clock speed, which the company claims will provide improved performance.
With some in-house tweaks, Kryo 585 cores are based on ARM’s Cortex-A77. Instead, the Snapdragon 888 SoC is based on the newer Cortex-X1 and A78, but there’s more to the performance as it operates at lower frequencies (2.84 GHz for the Cortex-X1). In order to see how all these chips compare, we’ll have to wait for the first benchmarks, though.
No improvements in the GPU are listed, but the company claims it will deliver geared-up gameplay with extremely fast Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming experience, truly global 5G sub-6 GHz as well as mmWave with external Snapdragon X55 modem, and ultra-intuitive AI. This is the first time that Qualcomm has launched a flagship SoC in three iterations.
In combination with HDR10+, Snapdragon 870 can accommodate 1440p class panels at up to 144Hz (or 4K at 60 Hz). There is also an ISP for Spectra 480, that’s the same as Snapdragon 865+. This chipset supports, sensors up to 200MP along with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, 8K video capture at 30 fps (and 4K at 120 fps).
A number of flagship smartphones from Motorola, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi will power the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870. In the first quarter of 2021, commercial Snapdragon 870-based devices are expected to be released.
