Movable Camera Module Being Developed By Xiaomi; How Can It Change Smartphone Camera Forever?

Xiaomi is set to be working on a movable camera module for smartphones. This technology isn’t yet quite clear so as to how extensively will it be able to change and revolutionise camera on smartphones. But some images from US Patent office shows how it works.

The Chinese brand had filed a patent at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) by Beijing Xiaomi Mobile Software in October 2019 and on 30 July 2020, the patent was officially approved and published in the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) database.

What Good Will It Do?

The movable camera module that was patented by Xiaomi is theoretically to assist in getting a picture from a wide viewing angle by making use of the two module camera. This means user will be able to take high-quality wide-angle images without any kind of distortion and drop in quality.

The phones we use nowadays have a dedicated wide-angle camera lens whose disadvantage being it causes distortion in images. Xiaomi’s latest patented technology can solve this problem.

How Does It Work?

The patent images show a dual-camera array attached which can swivel on an axis which will allow images to be taken while changing the viewing angle and even widen the field of view. This will, however, result in two images been taken forever shot which will have to then stitch together to obtain a higher quality distortion-free wide-angle images.

Doubts Surrounding This Tech?

Theoretically, this technology seems pretty simple, innovative, and interesting. But this technology is not just a walk in the park. The process from moving of the two cameras to clicking the picture, ‘stitching them’ and then presenting will require a lot of engineering.

Moreover, this tech will result in their being a carefully curated pair of cameras on a movable axis but dropping the phone or vigorous shaking may lead to alignment issues. This will also impact the overall fragility of the device.

Although this tech does help in obtaining higher quality images without distortion, it won’t mean any reduction in number of camera on the phone.

But credit where it’s due to Xiaomi for working on a very unconventional technology to help solve a serious camera issue. This technology does seem far away from reality on our daily drivers but we can expect some further improvements and refinement in this tech if and when it does become a reality.
