Zomato and Swiggy have now started alcohol delivery in Jharkhand. After receiving the requisite state government permissions, alcohol delivery officially began in Ranchi today and this will be expanded to other cities throughout the state in the coming days. Swaggy is introducing a ‘Wine Shops’ category to the app to order alcohol while Zomato is also expected to add a new wine category.
Alcohol orders require mandatory age verification and user authentication to avoid misuse. Age verification is carried out by uploading a valid government ID and selfie for authentication. At the time of delivery, the customer is then verified using an OTP.
There is also a capping on the volume of the order to ensure that a consumer will not order alcohol above the permissible amount as allowed by state law.
Zomato has confirmed that the company has begun delivering alcohol in Ranchi as well. The food distribution service has yet to announce whether it plans to hold verification of customers when distributing alcohol. Zomato has also announced that in the coming days, the alcohol delivery service will be extended to other Jharkhand cities.
This shows a big shift in the food delivery industry at the present time because there are no legal provisions for the home delivery of alcohol in India, which ISWAI (International Spirits and Wine Association) have changed.
