Xiaomi all set for a global launch of new smartphone on April 23 in India

Xiaomi’s official twitter account shared a teaser on a new global smartphone launch on April 23 in Delhi. This will be the first time that the Chinese company will launch its phone first in a foreign country.

Xiaomi seems to be going all guns blazing for the India market, after setting a world record for the most number of Xiaomi phones sold in 24 hours, Xiaomi now teases an invite for a global smartphone launch scheduled to happen on 23rd April in India. Yes, it is being teased as a ‘Global launch” and will be the first time that Xiaomi will be announcing a brand new global smartphone first in India. It just goes to show how serious and competitive Xiaomi wants to be in the India market. India is already Xiaomi’s second biggest market after China.

Xiaomi’s last two phones launches in India have been the Xiaomi Redmi 2 and the Mi4 flagship smartphone. While the Xiaomi Redmi 2 has met good response, the Xiaomi Mi4 has faced stiff competition from the OnePlus One. Xiaomi also has shown signs of wanting to try out the offline sales model in India.

Asus is also launching the eagerly awaited Asus Zenfone 2 on April 23rd. It is no coincidence that Xiaomi has chosen the date for its global phone announcement. Lately, Xiaomi has been facing stiff competition from Asus, OnePlus, Micromax Yu and Lenovo. And, it won’t be surprising if Xiaomi considers Asus as its biggest competitior of the 4 brands, given its already strong presence and awareness in India and its high success rate in the budget segment with the Asus Zenfone 5. Asus is expected to launch the Asus Zenfone 2 in India on April 23rd. We spent some time with the Asus Zenfone 2 today, and were generally impressed with Asus’s attempt at making a premium smartphone that is expected to be priced around Rs. 20,000 in India.

So, what kind of new phone will Xiaomi launch on Aprils 23? A budget or a premium phone?
